JFK In Rocker - 1963
This photo was produced on assignment for Newsweek in October 1963 for the January 1964 issue. Fred Ward contacted Pierre Salinger, the White House press secretary, about making the photo and asked for a quiet time, alone. Kennedy sat in his rocker and began looking over the small stack of papers he had brought from his desk. Fred Ward later recalled, This routine went on for several minutes. President read and I made more photographs. I thought the angles of the papers and his involvement could be better and kept waiting on him to turn the page or change his position a bit. He started to get up and was about half way out of the rocker then I blurted out ' No, no, Mr. President, please sit back down. I am not through.'And he did indeed sit down. I had never told a President when to sit or when to get up. But JFK was fine with the request.
