| Scenes Of Indian Life Two Women And Child (1937) |
Stephen Mopope (1898-1974) Two Women And Child adorned the wall of the Anadarko, Oklahoma Post Office in the 1930's. Stephen Mopope, a Kiowa artist, painted during an important and dynamic era when Native American art transitioned from a subject for ethnographers and anthropologists, at the end of the 19th century, to its establishment as a vital dimension of modern American painting. Mopope was born on the Kiowa Reservation in Indian Territory, near present day Anadarko, Oklahoma. He grew up within the confines of first-generation reservation life among people who knew an earlier pre-reservation freedom and the devastating effects of reservation life on the Kiowa land and people. He is perhaps the most accomplished member of the fabled Kiowa Five that studied at the University of Oklahoma. Mopope's overt paintings embody Kiowa life and contain a vibrancy that resonates across cultures and time. Today, Stephen Mopope is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
