The New York Times Picture Section cover, dated Oct. 21, 1917. Photograph of Abraham Lincoln made under the supervision of George H. Story, curator emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lincoln was photographed by Alexander Gardner at Mathew Brady's studio in Washington on Feb. 23, 1861, just a few weeks before the start of the Civil War. The Battle of New Orleans was a seven-day battle (April 25 May 1, 1862) and major turning point in the Civil War as the Union gained control of the largest Confederate city without a single casualty. New Orleans was captured without a battle in the city itself early on in the war and thus was spared the destruction suffered by many other cities in the South. Excellent condition.
