Relive the days of overland stagecoach travel in the Old Westwith a Painted Pony that captures a dramatic and symbolic moment infrontier history! Throughout most of the 1800s, stagecoaches were aprimary means of transportation across the American West. Theyhauled passengers, mail and freight across vast, treeless plains, jagged mountain passes, scorching deserts and rivers cursed withquicksand. To capture the iconic character of the stagecoach,Johanna Enriquez imagined a horse-drawn stagecoach running fromdanger – attacking Indians or outlaw robbers – down adusty trail, silhouetted against a sunset sky. Some of the most famous memorials, monuments and landmarks in our country inspired my Pony, says the artist, a full-time graphic designer at the University of Illinois. While acknowledging that Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial can only be fully appreciated when experienced in person, Janet wanted her Pony to be a kind of road trip across America... on horseback. The original For Spacious Skies was the Peoples Choice Award winner of the national America the Beautiful competition.A full-time graphic designer at the University of Illinois, Janet complements her professional career designing posters, fliers and advertisements with wonderfully rendered commissions of animals, mainly dogs and horses.Title: For Spacious SkiesArtist: Janet SnyderMedium: CeramicMeasures: 7¼

The original bunkhouse was a rough, simple building, often fashioned from the wood boards torn off old barns that provided sleeping quarters for ranch hands. Horse tack, wagon wheels and cow skulls were frequently tacked to weathered planks on the outside, while Western hats and ropes hung on the inside walls. Adding cozy ambiance, the whole place would smell of coffee brewing in an enamel pot on a wood-burning stove. Working these classic cowboy touches into a fabulous Painted Ponies design, this gifted Oregon artist has created an old-timey – yet timeless – tribute to our Western heritage.Based in the Pacific Northwest, Lynn is primarily a wildlife artist whose unique painting techniques and finely detailed multi-media artworks are prized by collectors across the country.Title: Bunkhouse BroncoArtist: Lynn BeanMedium: ResinMeasures: 7¼

On the frozen banks of Wounded Knee Creek, Lakota Chief Big Foot and his followers huddled together, hungry and exhausted. Driven off their lands, they surrendered and were surrounded by the U.S. 7th Calvary that had been ordered to peacefully escort them to a reservation. There was tension in the air. Troops feared the Sioux and the powerful Ghost Dances that spread through the Dakotas as the Indians frantically danced and prayed for the return of their way of life. A single shot rang out from a Calvary gun and chaos erupted. When the smoke cleared, peaceful Chief Big Foot and all of the Lakota lay dead in the snow. As the sun set on South Dakota, a single Native pony wandered the frozen plains in search of his beloved people who would dance no more. This Iowa artist postponed a career in the arts to raise a family, but has found her passion for painting rekindled with The Trail of Painted Ponies. Wounded Knee won first place in the Paint Your Own Pony contest held at the International Museum of the Horse in Lexington, Kentucky, in July of 2007.Title: Wounded KneeArtist: Vickie Knepper-AdrianMedium: ResinMeasures: 7¼

During the holidays as a child, all I wanted for Christmas was a big fluffy snowfall so I could build a perfect snowman, decorated with a hat and scarf, sticks for arms, a carrot for a nose and big black buttons of coal. Living in the Midwest, coal wasnt readily available, so Mom always had a tin full of buttons for the occasion, recalls Vickie Knepper-Adrian. Now, as an adult, this Iowa artist still finds something magical about big fluffy snowfalls, and created the Let It Snow Pony, designed to take everyone back to a time and place when they, too, waited with anticipation for the holidays and the chance to build that perfect snowman.Title: Let It SnowArtist: Vickie Knepper-AdrianMedium: ResinMeasures: 7¼

RetiredAccording to legend, candy canes were created to symbolize Jesus, their shape representing the letter J. Warriors from tribes across the Plains often wore feathers that were marked and painted in ways that told of their accomplishments in battle. In this fashion they would sometimes intimidate opponents who would be scared off after reading the stories related on the feathers. But sometimes they would also become the target of warriors who sought encounters with powerful opponents as a way of gaining personal power. With Tribal Paint, Iowa artist Vickie Knepper-Adrian, creator of the heartbreaking collectible, Wounded Knee, continues to use Painted Ponies to relate interesting and little-known stories about Plains Indian life.Title: Tribal PaintArtist: Vickie Knepper-AdrianMedium: ResinMeasures: 7

When I was a child I, read every horse book I could find, writes Janee Hughes, a multi-talented artist from the Pacific Northwest. My imagination soared with visions of magnificent steeds, each one faster, stronger and more beautiful than the last. This Pony depicts todays children, who still read the same wonderful stories. Recently, The Trail of Painted Ponies held a short-story contest, inviting collectors to compose a tribute to the Pony that most inspired them. The winner was so moved by Dream Horse that she wrote, Even today, you can still find me lying in the grass, reading horse stories and dreaming of horses galloping through my pasture.Janee Hughes has been painting and drawing all her life; but 31 years of teaching art left her little time for her own work. Since retiring in 1997, she has been able to do more painting and exhibiting. Her work usually is realistic and involves animals, especially horses. As a lifelong rider, horses are her favorite subject matter. Janee has also done work involving carousel animals. She has sold cartoons to newspapers and catalogs. She has combined her art with writing to produce several childrens books. And, through her Painted Ponies, she continues to amaze the world with her demonstrations of how diverse a canvas the horse can be.Title: Dream HorseArtist: Janee HughesMedium: CeramicMeasures: 7
