Waterloo Sunset Free Guitar Lesson
Waterloo Sunset, by the Kinks, began in Ray Davies head as Liverpool Sunset, partially owing to his fondness for the Merseybeat sounds of bands coming out of Liverpool at the time. The song featured a strumming acoustic guitar with a short lead using a tape-delay echo effect, a sound that had been popular a decade before but then forgotten. Cat Stevens - Morning Has Broken
*Morning Has Broken*is a tune that goes way back to Gaelic roots in Scotland then became a popular hymn in the early 20^th century. It took on new life in 1971 when Cat Stevens recorded it for his album Teaser And The Firecat, with some stylistic and artistic help from Rick Wakeman. This lesson goes over the chord progressions, strumming, and an expanded look at some of the theory involved in modulating and transposing to different keys.

The Ventures - Wipe Out
*Wipe Out*is one of the songs that started defining the �Surf Sound� that was evolving in Southern California around 1960. This instrumental was written and first recorded by The Surfaris, then later The Ventures and just about every other Surf Band out there. This lesson goes over the basic rhythm guitar part (a 12-bar blues progression), the melody played with an alternating picking technique in two different octaves, and a bit on using the minor pentatonic scale to create your own lead.

*Tell Her No*was the second hit for The Zombies in 1965. Written by keyboard play Rod Argent, it features some jazzy, extended chords and nice riffs and passing lines between chords. The quick changes and syncopated strumming patterns make this quite a challenge for most guitar players.

The last big hit for The Zombies, *Time Of The Season*was a song driven by a bass line, keyboard fills and solos, a few percussion accents, and compelling vocals by Colin Blunstone. It is another Rod Argent tune that can be fun to play on the guitar, especially when trying to capture some of those parts. This lesson looks at a very easy way of strumming the song as well as a more complicated version that incorporates many of those items into the accompaniment. Neil also includes some thoughts on singing and improvising a short lead over the chord changes

Cat Stevens - Moonshadow
*Moonshadow*is one of Cat Stevens� most popular tunes and fun to play on the guitar. It uses a combination of different right hand techniques, including fingerpicking with a mono-bass pattern (repeating the same string rather than alternating), a hybrid picking-strumming technique, as well as a bigger strumming pattern where the �Invisible Pick� technique works best. The song was originally released on the 1971 album Teaser And The Firecat.

*Peace Train*is a song that only uses a few simple chords but is deceptively difficult to play. It has a very distinctive and recognizable intro and a short fill but most of the song is strumming C, G, F, and Am. The difficulty comes with the speed of the chord changes, as well as when they happen. This is another classic from Cat Stevens� album Teaser And The Firecat

Rev. Gary Davis - Sally, Where�d You Get Your Liquor
*Sally, Where�d You Get Your Whiskey*is one of Reverend Gary Davis� more whimsical tunes, although it falls into the blues category of doing away with an unfaithful woman. It is more Ragtime than Blues and is done in swing time. It uses easy chords and nice runs but has a challenging stretch as well as the added complication of singing over a syncopated guitar part.

John Fahey - Take A Look At That Baby
John Fahey was the founder of his self-described style, christened American-Primitive Guitar. His sound and influence on the next generations are unmistakable. *Take A Look At That Baby*is one of his earliest pieces, recorded for his second album, /Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes./ It is a simple, ragtime progression in the key of C and not too difficult until you work on speeding it up. It uses the basic alternating bass technique but also really needs the left hand thumb wrap (fretting the 6^th string with your left thumb) to be done most accurately
