Ukulele Lesson - Hanapepe Waltz
A popular old-time piece, the Hanapepe Waltz was composed by Mr. Kamiki in the 1920s. The music is from a book, �The Collection Of Popular Early Hawaiian Ukulele Methods.� The melody is played in the bass and creates the feeling of riding on a carousel. This is a beginning level lesson. Hanapepe means �crushed bay� and the Hanapepe River is the third longest river on the island of Kauai. Hanapepe did not start as a plantation town, as so many others did. From the mid to late 1800s, Hanapepe had Hawaiians raising taro and Chinese immigrants raising rice. To some, the attitude and the buildings resemble a frontier town. Hanapepe was once a thriving town that had port facilities nearby to ship out bulk sugar, as well as an airstrip for the first interisland air service in 1929.

Argent - Hold Your Head Up
After The Zombies disbanded in 1968, keyboardist Rod Argent resurfaced with his own band, Argent, which included Chris White, another ex-Zombie on bass. The two of them collaborated on some great songs in the early 1970s and *Hold Your Head Up*is probably their best known. The song features a pounding, hypnotic bass under some distorted guitar chords, then a lengthy, spacey keyboard solo. This short lesson looks at combining the bass and guitar parts into a solid accompaniment to the verse, as well as the accented (and shocking sounding) chords in the chorus.

The Zombies were a one-of-a-kind British band who did not put out many albums but wrote and recorded a handful of classics for the ages. Their sound was mainly identified by the vocals of Colin Blunstone and the exquisite keyboard work of Rod Argent. Ukulele Lesson - My Sweet Sweetie
This is a waltz played using an arpeggio accompaniment, where the right hand fingers are picking individual strings. It uses just three chords, A, D, and G, and was arranged by Hal and his friend Kenny Rapozo.

Over The Rainbow is one of the most famous tunes in the American songbook. Written for the movie The Wizard Of Oz, by E. Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen, it is a slow ballad that makes great use of jazz chord substitutions. It is in the key of C and an intermediate to advanced level lesson.

Zombies - I Love You
*I Love You*is a song by The Zombies that was written by bass player Chris White but never charted for the band. It was a hit in the US by San Jose-based one-hit-wonder /People!/ in 1968. It has a nice melody picked out over Am and Fmaj7 in the intro and a typical 60s muted strumming pattern in the verse. It also is a good song to learn the technique of fretting notes with your left thumb.

Roy Orbison - Crying
Roy Orbison is best known for his voice, and *Crying*is a song that shows why. It is a simple strumming tune with a slightly unusual progression, all of which create a great backdrop for this vocal masterpiece. This lesson looks at Roy�s arrangement, as well as Don McLeans rearrangement, about 20 years later.

Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind
*Always On My Mind*is a song most people associate with Willie Nelson but the original was done by Brenda Lee in 1972. Elvis took a turn with it a little later. This lesson is mostly along the lines of Willie�s version in spite of the fact that the piano was the main accompanying instrument. We use a somewhat unusual double-bass-note strumming pattern, a few chord inversions, and some passing bass notes to make this a great and fun song for guitar players

Ukulele Lesson - Jesu, Joy Of Man�s Desiring
J.S. Bach is probably the greatest composer of all time. This piece was not originally written for ukulele but you would never know it. It is representative of the beautiful, flowing style that Bach had on many levels. It is written in 9/8 time but easier to think about as 3/4 with the melody being played in triplets.

Ukulele Lesson - Opihi Moe Moe
Opihi Moe Moe was composed by Leonard Kwan and is one of the most requested slack key guitar songs of all time. The piece is played on the guitar in the key of G but transposed to C to fit the ukulele. The lesson includes a slightly simplified version first, using mostly quarter and eighth note rhythms but triplets are added later to keep it more traditional, and a little more challenging. Try to keep up the energy in this piece to give it a paniolo style (Hawaiian cowboy). Some of the techniques necessary are addressed in the Solo Ukulele Workshop series of lessons.

Willie Nelson - Crazy
Willie Nelson wrote *Crazy *as a journeyman songwriter in 1961. Later that year Patsy Cline recorded it and it became one of her biggest hits, as well as putting Willie a little more firmly in the mix of great songwriters. This lesson looks mostly at Willie�s version, in spite of the fact that the main accompaniment was done on the piano. There is a transcription of the piano intro, a basic strumming version of the chords, which are more jazzy than country, and a short look at the modulation (key change) that happens at the end.

Bread - Guitar Man
Most of David Gates� songs include nice fingerpicking. *Guitar Man*is one of his few tunes that is a simple strumming song. It was the title song of their Bread�s 1972 album and includes some of his signature chord progressions, but is one of his easiest songs to play and sing.

Bread - Everything I Own
*Everything I Own*was a hit for Bread in 1972, and is another one in a string of beautiful, touching songs from the pen of David Gates. The original was done with a capo at the 7^th fret but most of the lesson is done open. It covers the picking in both the verse and bridge, as well as the strumming in the chorus. This song has been one of our most requested for quite a while.

Ukulele Song - Estudio
Francisco Tarrega wrote many beautiful exercises for classical guitar in Spain in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is played in E minor on the guitar but transposed to A minor on the ukulele. The right hand uses standard classical guitar arpeggio technique with the thumb playing the 4^th string, index finger playing the 3^rd , middle finger playing the 2^nd string, and the ring finger playing the 1^st .

Don McLean - American Pie
*American Pie*was the song that put Don McLean on the map of great songwriters forever. Released in 1971, on his second album, the song tells the story of �The Day The Music Died�, along with dozens of pieces of 1960s Americana. The song is a basic strumming one with fairly easy chords. It is just a matter of learning the progression and tying in the lyrics,

Don McLean - And I Love You So
*And I Love You So*is a song that came to light after Don McLean�s success with Vincent and American Pie, and all of a sudden singers were looking through his back catalog for material. It wasn�t long before there were dozens of covers of this classic, most notably one by Perry Como in the early 1970s. The song features a delicate, arpeggio picking accompaniment where the melody is somewhat incorporated into the picking.

Bread - Aubrey
*Aubrey*was on Bread�s 1972 album, Guitar Man, and is another in the classic fingerstyle tradition of many other David Gates� songs. This of course includes his angelic vocals and melodies. The picking is mostly arpeggios with a descending bass line moving through the changes.

*Castles In The Air*is an early Don McLean tune, from his first album, Tapestry, which became a hit after he hit it big with his second album, American Pie. It is played in Dropped D Tuning and features some quick fingerpicking.

Willie Nelson - Night Life
*Night Life*is an early Willie Nelson song that was a hit for country star Ray Price in the early 1960s. Willie joined Ray�s band as a bass player and a decade later began his own solo career. The song is another that has a jazz feel (like Crazy) and follows a standard A-A-B-A form. This lesson goes over strumming the chords, as well as a fingerstyle approach, and covers the lead fills that pop up in the B section.

*On The Road Again*was written by Willie Nelson for the 1980 movie Honeysuckle Rose. It has now become one of his signature songs. It is almost a typical country progression and strumming pattern with a couple of twists and turns that make it instantly memorable. This lesson goes over the alternating bass pattern with a few hammer-ons and passing bass notes connecting the chords

*Ka�anapali Sunset*was written by Herb Ohta Jr. and first appeared on his album Ukuklele Dream in 2001. Ka�anapali is a beautiful area on the island of Maui and this song is more similar in style to slack key guitar than traditional ukulele tunes. Hal�s arrangement is based on one by his friend Paul Togioka and this lesson is fairly advanced.
